Root Canal Treatment - Scottish Dental | Dentist in Dundee

Using the most up-to-date techniques and technology, our endodontics experts are able to perform root canal treatment on patients in-house.

A root canal treatment is performed in order to remove infection at the root of the tooth – i.e. in the interior of the tooth (also sometimes referred to as the dental pulp).

What causes infection of the dental pulp?

Infection at the root/interior of the tooth is most often a result of untreated tooth decay or gum disease but is also sometimes caused by an accident or injury.

What symptoms are associated with needing root canal treatment?

  • Increased sensitivity
  • Toothache and/or throbbing in the tooth
  • Pain when chewing
  • A loose tooth
  • In advanced cases, an abscess

How long does the treatment take?

In most cases, we’ll be able to treat you over two appointments. Some patients may need more appointments, but this depends on the extent of the infection and the damage present.

Will the treatment be painful?

We know this treatment has something of a reputation among patients as being particularly painful or uncomfortable. The truth is, however, that once we have removed the infection and restored your tooth, you’ll be in much less pain than you were previously as infection in the interior of the tooth can cause severe pain and inflammation. We’ll always numb the area being treated first, and then apply a local anaesthetic, so you can be sure you won’t feel a thing. We’re also able to use sedation on any patients who may feel they need it.

What happens during the treatment?

After the local anaesthetic has taken effect, we’ll first remove the infection from the inside of the tooth before thoroughly cleaning the roots and filling them with a rubber-type material and sealing the tooth back up to prevent any further infection.

Will I need a crown?

In many cases, we’ll then apply a crown to ensure that the tooth has been restored to full function. Not all patients require a crown, and this will be decided according to your own personal situation.
