Sinus Lifts - Scottish Dental | Dentist in Dundee

With a sinus lift, we can help ensure that even patients who have suffered from bone loss can still receive the implant treatments they need for a happier, healthier smile.

A sinus lift is a surgical treatment designed to help address bone loss between the upper jaw and the sinus membrane. When a patient has experienced bone loss in this area, it could prevent them from receiving a dental implant to replace a tooth, but with a sinus lift, we can ensure the implant is safe and successful.

Why do I need a sinus lift?

As mentioned, sinus lifts are carried out to counteract the bone loss in this area, which is most often caused by missing or damaged teeth. It can also be brought about by an accident or trauma to the face, complex tooth extractions, and gum disease.

What is the treatment process like?

First, we’ll take a CBCT scan to assess the mouth and measure the height and width of the existing bone. When carrying out the treatment, we’ll administer anaesthetic to make sure you’re comfortable and pain-free throughout and once it has taken effect, the surgeon will cut into the gum to reveal the sinus membrane. New bone material will be placed with a collagen membrane to help hold it in place.

What is the recovery like?

After the treatment, you should expect some swelling and pain in the area, which can usually be treated with over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen or paracetamol. We will ask you to come into the practice for a follow-up appointment 1-2 weeks after your surgery, so that we can assess your progress and make sure everything is healing as it should. The area should be fully healed within 4-9 months, at which point we’ll be able to arrange for your dental implant treatment.
