What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is also known as gum disease and refers to an infection in the gums that can lead to gum recession and bleeding, swelling, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss.

What causes periodontal disease?

Periodontal/gum disease is most often caused by bacteria within the plaque that isn’t removed through good cleaning and proper oral hygiene. This leads to infection and if left untreated, can spread to below the gum level, affecting the gums and bone as they gradually recede and shrink.

Am I at risk for periodontal disease?

Those most at risk for periodontal disease include smokers and anyone with diabetes, although the fact is, anyone can suffer from periodontal disease if they do not take care of their oral health and hygiene properly.

How can I prevent periodontal disease?

Preventing periodontal disease is incredibly simple if you follow your dentist’s recommendations of:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes
  • Flossing or using an interdental toothbrush daily
  • Regularly using a mouthwash
  • Following a healthy diet
  • Visiting the dentist for annual or bi-annual check-ups
  • Attending dental hygiene appointments annually or bi-annually depending on recommendations

What is the treatment for periodontal disease?

Depending on the extent of the infection, you will either be treated by your dentist, dental hygienist, or a dental therapist. In some cases, the infection can be treated through deep scaling under the gums, while more advanced cases might require surgery, tooth extraction, and eventually, tooth replacement.
