With fillings, we can repair and restore damaged and decayed teeth, returning them to their prior appearance and ensuring they remain fully functional.

Fillings are used to treat and fill in cavities/caries, and can also be used to repair teeth damaged through accident or wear and tear, resulting in cracked or broken teeth.

What causes cavities/caries?

Cavities/caries are caused by tooth decay which is a result of a build-up of plaque and tartar which in turn causes bacteria to build up and dissolve the surface of the tooth.

What are fillings made from?

Fillings are usually made from either metal amalgam, or from composite resin. Metal amalgam fillings are very hard-wearing and durable, but do leave behind a dark silver-like appearance, while composite fillings are tooth-coloured and designed to fit in with the rest of the mouth.

How long does the treatment take?

Most fillings can be placed in just one appointment.

Will the treatment be painful?

We’ll first numb the area being treated before applying a local anaesthetic, so you’ll be comfortable and pain-free throughout.

What happens during the treatment?

After your local anaesthetic has taken effect, the decayed part of the tooth will be removed and the area thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. We’ll then apply the appropriate filling material and seal the tooth back up to prevent reinfection.
