The dental implant patient journey:
At your consultation, we’ll talk through all your options and carry out a CBCT scan so we can determine the bone density and width at what will become the implant site. At this point, we may have to recommend a bone graft or sinus lift in order to carry out the implantation successfully.
If we’ve determined you can move on without further treatment, you’ll come back into the practice so that we can virtually plan your treatment. Using cutting-edge technology to help us precisely plan your surgery, we’ll be able to achieve more precise outcomes and a smooth surgical experience.
Using computer-guided technology, your dental implant surgery will be carried out by implantology experts while you are comfortably under anaesthetic. Once the implant is in the jaw, there will be a wait of up to three months while the jawbone and implant successfully fuse together. During this time, we’ll be able to provide you with a temporary prosthetic tooth.
Once the implant and jaw have successfully fused together, you’ll come back in to have your personal prosthesis placed.
What are implants made of?
Implants are made up of a titanium peg, which acts as the new root of the tooth, and the prosthetic tooth/crown that sits securely on top of it – this is usually made of ceramic, porcelain, or Zirconia.
Is this treatment suitable for me?
We’ll ascertain whether or not a dental implant is a right choice for you at a consultation.
There are a few factors that could affect your suitability, including:
- Poor oral health – we may have to first address some issues before proceeding with the implant process
- Gum disease – we would need to first treat any gum disease before moving forward with implantation
- Insufficient bone – in some cases, we may be able to treat this with a bone graft or sinus lift
- Younger patients – if a teenager or young person loses a tooth, implants aren’t a suitable option as their jawbone hasn’t finished developing yet
- Health issues – heart disease, clinical obesity, and previous experience with certain cancers may prevent a patient from receiving this treatment
