Good dental hygiene is the key to happy oral health.

Proper dental hygiene is the foundation upon which a patient’s long-term oral health is based. The combination of a proper at-home routine, regular visits the hygienist, and frequent dental examinations can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease from developing. This in turn will help reduce or even prevent the need for treatments such as fillings, crowns, root canal treatment and more.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a loose term used to cover conditions that affect the gums and other tissues that support the teeth, including gingivitis and periodontitis. It is one of the most common diseases in Europe and is also the leading cause of tooth loss.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

  • Bleeding gums – especially after brushing the teeth
  • Swollen/inflamed gums
  • Bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • A change in colour in the gums to bright red or purplish

How can gum disease be prevented?

The good news is that gum disease is highly preventable with proper dental hygiene and routine visits to the hygienist and dentist. Removing plaque and tartar is key to preventing gum disease, as this can cause bacteria in the mouth to develop into an infection. Airflow Tooth Polishing, which we can provide during dental hygiene appointments, is a great way to ensure any build-up of plaque and tartar in the mouth is removed.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?

During your dental hygiene appointment, our expert hygienist will first carry out a full and thorough assessment of the mouth, making sure to check the health of your gums. They’ll then provide a full cleaning, reaching areas of the mouth that can’t be reached when brushing at home and leaving it feeling refreshed and revived. They’ll make any recommendations as necessary – this could be related to diet and lifestyle, such as cutting back on sugary drinks and food or stopping smoking or giving guidance on brushing and flossing techniques.
